Sector Test Meeting 29th November 2005

Present:  Verena Kain, Brennan Goddard, Roger Bailey, Mike Lamont (chair), Jan Uythoven, Stephen Jackson, Greg Kruk, Nicholas Hoibien, Rhodri Jones, Alex Koschik, Lars Jensen, Jorg Wenninger.

Issues arising:

Beam Position Monitors

Rhodri Jones presented the anticipated state of play for the configuration and installation of the BPMs in 78 and 81.   His presentation here.

Rhodri raised following questions re.Control System Architecture
– Do we extend the TI8 system or base it on a prototype LHC system?  Clear consensus that we should prototype LHC system. Should take advantage of beam to test maximum functionality.
– Data from Survey & MTF databases need to be available for offset & linearity correction. Survey data to LSA database. BDI can take care of the rest.
– SPS BST used for timing & trigger. Will LHC BST be available? Follow-up.

– What is Logged?
• Average position -yes
• Bunch to bunch position - yes

Lars Jensen presented the controls and acquisition strategy. His presentation here.

• Hardware acquires individual LHC bunches (@ 40 MHz)
• LHC system is exact copy of BPMI (TI8) trajectory system in terms of hardware
• We can provide calibrated position data:
– Bunch-by-Bunch (B selected bunches over T selected turns)
– Turn-by-turn (average of all valid bunches in 1 turn)
– Closed-orbit (average of all valid bunches over N turns)
• Hardware works in one of two acquisition modes:
– Synchronous (needs BST timing and correct phases)
– Asynchronous (safer, but 40MHz information lost)
• Sensitivity switch in the tunnel controlled over WorldFIP to handle big intensity variations (high for pilots, low for I > ??). This via PCs not using FESA.
• BPM sum signal or not and how to handle ??  Intensity cards probably not ready for sector test - possible to put a few cards in at selected position.

BPM timing events:
• We will need these LHC timing events:
– Fore-warning before FIRST LHC injection takes place
• Setup hardware modules (phases) etc
– Short warning to arm acquisition modules before each LHC injection. We can publish the data for each injection based on this event

Noted during discussion.

Next meeting 7th December to discuss installation and hardware commissioning.
